This painting is unique and original and was painted entirely by me. The hull form was copied from a black and white sketch by Wm. Van der Velde, and the sail form, rigging and background detail were composed by me.
The Tiger of 1647.
The Tiger was launched in 1647 as a frigate-galley to combat the Arab Mediterranean galleys (she carried ports either side of the gunports for the deploying of oars in windless condotions). She was built by Peter Pett 2nd of Deptford as a 4th Rate to carry up to 44 guns.She played a part in the Battle of Portland (Febuary 1643),Battle of the Gabbard (June 1653), the First battle of Schevengingen (July 1653), the St James Day Battle (June 1666), and the Battle of Solebay (May 1672). She was rebuilt in Deptford in 1681 by John Shish as a 48 gun ship. Her last rebuild was in 1702.
