This painting is unique and original and painted entirely by me. The hull form was sketched by me from photographs taken of the model at the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and the sail form, rigging and background detail were composed by me.
The Naesby of 1655.
The Naesby was named after a crushing Commonwealth victory in the 2nd English Civil war, and was built by Peter Pett 1st at Woolwich in 1655 as a 80-86 gun 1st Rate. Rename the Royal Charles in 1660, she participated in the Battle of Lowestoft (June 1665), the 4 Days Battle (June 1666) and the ST. James Day Battle (July 1666). She taken from her moorings by the Dutch during the Medway Raid led by DeRuyter and taken to the Nederlands. There she was broken up in 1673 being of too great a displacement to be useful to her captors, but a large section of her transom (showing the arms of Charles the 2nd) is now on show at the Ryjks Museum in Armstadam.
