This painting is unique and original and painted entirely by me. The hull form was sketched by me from photographs taken by me of the actual model at the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and the sail form, rigging and background detail were composed by me.
The Mordant of 1681. Built as a privateer, but then incorporated in the English navy.
The Mordant of 1681 was built by William Castle of Deptford as a 4th Rate 46 gun Privateer, for a syndicate led by Lord Mordant (later the Earl of Peterborough). She was bought for the Navy in 1683 after Diplomatic complaints from the Spanish Ambassador that she was intended to raid the Spanash Treasure fleet. She foundered in November 1693 off the Cuban coast.
