takao

JJN heavy cruiser Takao

IJN Takao was part of a 4 unit Takao class cruiser build programme of 1930 at the Yokosuka Navy Yard. She was commissioned in1932, and during WW2 provided fire support for the Japanese landings at Luzon in the Philippines in December 1941. While on interception duties in 1942, she sank destroyer USS Pillsbury, provided cover for Japanese landings at the Alaskan Aleutian Islands, and engaged USS surface vessels during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and Battle of Santa Cruz Islands - where she contributed to the sinking of the USS Hornet. She also managed some hits on the battleship USS South Dakota. In November 1943 she suffered bomb damage and required dockyard repairs. She was present at the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot – the beginning of the end for Japan. She was torpedoed by USS submarine Darter while working off Singapore and Brunei. Her sisters Atagao and Mayo were sunk and Takao made it to back to Singapore. While she was under emergency repairs, she was heavily damaged by a British midget submarine, but survived to see the surrender of Japan after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. The Anatomy of the Ship book series contains a volume written by Janusz Skulski "The Heavy Criuser Takao" which deals with the technical aspects as well as the history of this ship.
