warspite

The battleship HMS Warspite.

HMS Warspite was laid down in 1912 and launched in November 1913. She was present at the Battle of Jutlandwhere a rudder malfunction caused her to perform a strange manouvere late to be known as “the Warspite turn”. She boasts many WW2 battle honours – seeing action at the Battle of Calabria (June 1940), Battle of Taranto (November 1940}, Battle of Cape Matapan (March 1941). Refitted in March 1942 after bomb damage, she joined the Eastern fleet at Trincomalee (Ceylon). Later in 1943, she supported Allied landings at Salerno in Southern Italy but was hit by a German Guided Bomb delivered by Dornier Do217 bombers of KG100, and suffered heavy damage. After repairs she joined Bombardment Force D  for invasion prepearations in Operation Overlord engaging enemy targets on Sword, Gold and Utah beaches. Returning to UK to have worn-out barrels replaced, she hit a mine, but returned to action after repairs. After WW2 she was being towed to the breakers yard, and even then, broke free but ran aground.
